About

Brought to you by Hawthorn Cycling Club, The Hanging Rock Handicap is back in 2020, and better than ever, thanks to our generous sponsors Topbike Tours (http://www.topbike.com.au) and Macedon Ranges Shire Council. Join Australia’s biggest and best women’s road race event!

65km women-only road race, handicap format, based at the picturesque Hanging Rock Reserve, only one hour from Melbourne.

We’ll have the same beautiful Hanging Rock backdrop for registration and post-race celebrations, coffee cart, catering, massages and more.

Open to CA race licence holders - anything with the word 'race' in the title (includes 7 day, 2- month, 12 month and 'bring a mate' licences). See https://cycling.org.au/membership/race

Females only, 15yrs+

Schedule

  • Rego open: - 0800
  • Race start (limit): - 0900 (for limit group, the rest within the next ~30 mins)
  • Race finish: - 1200 approx.
  • Rego location: - Hanging Rock East Paddock picnic area, entry via gate 10, Colwell’s Rd

Course info

65km women-only road race, handicap format Quiet rolling roads around Hanging Rock, Lancefield and Newham, 2 loops. Course map here – https://www.strava.com/routes/17509743

Safety and amenity is our priority. Precautions include CA-qualified race commissaires, traffic controllers (with restricted traffic on Colwell's Rd), corner marshals, follow cars, first aid. The race has permits from council, VicRoads, Victoria Police and CV. This year we've tweaked the course so it runs past the reserve each lap, and traffic control on this road means a clear run at the finish.

Start & Finish locations

  • **Start and Finish: Colwell's Rd, near the park entrance

Other

  • Concierge service for new racers - make yourself known at the rego desk.

  • Red light policy as per CV - on steady mode, leave room for your transponder behind the seatpost (see pic below)

  • Please provide the handicapper with useful information such as where you think you sit within your grade, who else is at a similar level (this is probably the most useful), how you fared in recent races, especially in handicaps - just do your best and we will try to make it as fair as possible.

  • WATER - Please note the water available at the rego location is not suitable for drinking. Please fill your water bottles at home. Limited delicious Melbourne water will be available on site. Potable water is available at Newham Primary School.

  • In the event of a CODE RED fire danger rating day, the reserve will be closed and the race will be cancelled/postponed. An extreme weather policy will apply on other high fire danger days (race may be cancelled at the discretion of the organisers).

Facilities

  • Parking: - plenty of on-site parking
  • Toilets: - public onsite, clean and plentiful
  • Coffee cart: - of course
  • Food: - catering will be provided at budget rates

  • MASSAGES: Soothe those post-race aches with a massage by the wonderful and expert Victorian Physiotherapy Students, for a gold coin (or more) donation. All proceeds to their Bushfire Appeal https://m.facebook.com/vicphysiobushfireappeal/

Transponder Mounting

  • Cable ties will be provided at Rego.
  • Rego will happily help with transponders and race numbers if you are unsure - please feel free to ask.
  • Transponders and Race Numbers need to be returned after racing (bring race licence or driver's licence)

  • All live results are provisional until confirmed by Commissaires.

Special Notice re Transponder Mounting

  • Please note: if you have a race number mount fitted to your bike, our experience is many of these break or have the transponder rotate into the wheel. We ask that you please mount as instructed. If your seatpost is too short, please use the rails under your seat or ask for help.

Skills sessions

To get you prepared we are offering low cost skills sessions in the lead-up, to teach not only the skills of fast rolling bunch riding, the key to handicap racing, but the knowledge and confidence to give it a go. Brought to you by Will Howard and Matt Scott from Kilowatt Cycle Coaching. 4 Macedon-based sessions: 1 Dec, 15 Dec, 12 Jan, 2 Feb. Free and open to all riders (local riders a priority) 2 Melbourne-based sessions: 18 Jan (for triathletes), 1 Feb. $10 per session for non-HCC members (free to HCC members)
