Derby Back-Roads Series is a 2 round Gravel series run as a participation event rather than a race format. We know how much gravel riders love riding together with their mates, enjoying lots of discussion and banter on the way. But if you want to pin it, if racing is in your blood, then go for it. It's up to you. With a wealth of great unpaved roads in the Derby region, it's the perfect place to get in the drops, and crank out those glorious gravel miles. You'll discover some amazing, hidden back roads that will add to the adventure. We'll finish the ride at a fine local Derby establishment, where you can enjoy some liquid refreshments, and a feed if you wish. We can't wait for you to come and join us!
Note: we are using the same loops originally planned for Round 1 as there is still some damage and trees down on the routes that were planned for Round 2.
The ride is a participation event, not a race. There will be no timing gear or race plates issued. You can ride together with your friends at a cruisey pace, or go as hard as you like. We are offering 2 loops. The short loop is 51km in length with an elevation gain of 575m. The long loop is 69km in length with an elevation gain of 1,087m. You can download GPX/FIT files of each of the loops from this page. It is recommended that each rider download the route and upload it to their device. There will be minimal marshals out on the course, only where absolutely necessary. There will however be signage (red arrows) at all intersections. Please note that there will be some paved sections, including on the Tasman Highway, so all riders are advised to use common sense, obey all road rules, and ride safely. Additionally, there will be a sweep vehicle on course to ensure everyone gets to the finish, along with providing first aid capabilities, and a bike mechanic to assist if necessary. All riders must be self sufficient, and carry the appropriate gear to deal with punctures and other minor mechanical issues.
Start times will be staggered as follows:
The aim is to get most riders finishing roughly around the same time. Please ensure you are registered at least 15 minutes before the first wave of either the long loop or short loop departing. We will hold a short Rider Briefing at 08:45AM and again at 09:45AM. There will be one food & drink station on course. This will be located around the 31km mark on the short loop, and the 48.5km mark on the long loop. The ride will finish at Lot 40. Your event entry fee includes a drink at Lot 40 Bar.
The Derby MTB Club would like to thank the following organisations for their support, and access to forestry land they manage:
