Girls Who Ride is Back!

Calling All Junior Girls at Canberra CC and Vikings CC

Girls Who Ride bunch is back (and re-scheduled after a weather delay)!! We are building on the big success of the small inaugural ‘Girls Who Ride’ bunch run by our awesome local racers, Emma Viotto and Jennifer Darmody. We have confirmed a date for the rescheduled event on Saturday Saturday 6 November 2021.

Joining the bunch this time, the girls will have recently retired world tour professional and current voice, mentor and activist for professional cyclists in the womens’ sport, Gracie Elvin. As many of you know, Gracie has become a member of the Canberra CC committee as a club captain and we are very grateful she is joining Jen and Em on this endeavour for our local junior girls. The ride will be similar in format to the inaugural ride; go out with the ride leaders for an easy 15-20km, do some bunch training, talk, asks questions, have fun and return to the café for post ride ‘nutrition’. Gracie comes from the very top of the women’s sport, but like Jen and Em, she is a local woman and has much to offer to our junior girls in terms of inspiration and leadership, in both sport and life. There will be plenty of opportunity for the junior girls to ask Gracie about her life in elite sport and what she’s doing these days for women in cycling. But most importantly, this is another opportunity for the girls to relax and have fun in the company of three really nice women, while riding bikes. We hope to see as many of our young riders joining Em, Jen and Gracie for Girls Who Ride #2.

The ‘Girls Who Ride’ bunch ride is for competent U13-U17 girls, with the focus on bunch skills, fitness and most importantly, a safe social environment for mentoring, group conversation and good times, all under the leadership of our local experts and racers.

“We want to keep our young cyclists engaged in the sport for the long term and attract many more along the way. Canberra has a wealth of riches when it comes to experienced and successful cycling women. We hope that by running and growing this juniors’ bunch we can use these experienced women to help build development pathways for our junior girls, so that they stay in the sport for the long term, both to their and the sport’s benefit.”
