Event Summary

THIS XCC RACE HAS BEEN POSTPONED. It was due to run on Sunday 8th March, 2pm but will now take place on SATURDAY 14th March at 2pm. Please note that it is Saturday not Sunday. All current entries are rolled over to the new date. If you can’t make the new date feel free to scratch your entry.

This is a short course cross country race, (an XCC, which is short for cross country criterium) at Welby that will begin with a time trial!

We will start with the time trial. Riders will be sent off on the short lap of around 1km at regular intervals to record a time.

We will then use those times to divide the riders into two race groups for the XCC, with the usual categories all represented in one group or the other.

In the XCC, riders race around the same short loop of around 1km and race for a specified number of laps (expect a race of 15-20 minutes). For ease of knowing what is going on, we will decide on a set number of laps for each race and hold up cards showing how many laps to go, with a bell for the last lap. The bell and the lap numbers are held up for the leader of the race and every rider behind them also gets the same lap numbers and bell so that even if they have been lapped, once the leader finishes, all riders that cross the line after them also finish, even if they have not done all the laps. The winner of each category is the rider with the most laps and if lap numbers are equal, the shortest time.

This format is fun for kids entering their first race as there is lots of spectator support. It is also fun for elite racers and everyone in between as there is plenty of room for passing and lots of opportunity for fast riding. The adults and kids do not race at the same time, so they can cheer and heckle each other on! The number of start groups will be decided on the day based on the number of entrants in each category. All riders should be ready to race at 2:00pm.

Please note all entry is online - CUTOFF is at 11:00am on the day of the race, so that we have time to print start lists etc before going to work and then heading to the track.

Number plates can be collected from 1:00. We recommend riders do a practice lap around the course, before racing begins, which should only really take a few minutes.

There are categories for all ages, from beginners and young kids to experienced racers. $10 adults, $5 children for Highlands Trails members or $15 adults, $10 children if you are not yet a member. BTW, becoming a member costs $10 (you can use the Club Add-On facility on the AusCycling website if you are already a member of another club) and you get a free water bottle valued at more than $10!

To enter you will need a valid AusCycling Race Licence. Please go to Membership on the AusCycling website if you are not currently a member.

Note: Go down the old tip road opposite the hockey centre entrance to get to the Start/Finish.

In 2022 Highlands Trails took over the responsibility of running all mountain bike events in the Southern Highlands. Previously Southern Highlands Cycling Club organised events in road, track and MTB, but they now specialise in only road and track.
