It’s back! Finally, after a long postponement, a date has been set for the inaugural CSA State Hill Climb Championships! This is the event we’ve been asked about most this year, and we’re excited to team up with the Adelaide University Cycling Club to bring you a timed run up the combination of Knotts Hill and Pound Roads, one of the Adelaide Hills’ most punishing climbs. It’ll be a great excuse to get off the trainer and see how you stack up against your friends and the rest of the state!

For the serious it’s perhaps a chance at redemption from State Roads, and for the not-so-serious, an opportunity to nab some bragging rights with your regular riding group. We’ll be awarding a podium for not just the Elite, U19/23 and Masters 1-3, 4/5, 6/7, 8+ Categories, but also a Singlespeed category and a Tandem category!

To break things up a bit, we’ll also be awarding podiums at the presentations in line with the Weight Classes you’d see on a Strava segment. Participation in the weight classes is completely voluntary, and if you do want to be considered for your weight class podium you’ll have the chance to jump on the scales at sign on with all your gear (bike, helmet, shoes and all) and have your weight class recorded. A podium place in any of the State Championship categories will trump your Weight Class entry, so don’t expect to stand on the podium twice!

About the climb

For those unfamiliar, the Knotts Hill/Pound combo is a real doozy. Only 2.5km long but with a total elevation gain of over 200m it’s bound to leave some sore legs come Sunday, with beautiful gully views for the entire duration of the climb.

* These grades are not official State Championship grades and as such winners of these grades will not be presented with official Championship medals.
** Challenge grade is to be entered if a rider wishes to race early in the session rather than enter Elite or Masters and race at the end.

*** Masters medals will be award to a Masters 1-3 podium, a Masters 4/5 podium, a Masters 6/7 podium and a Masters 8+ podium in both Men's and Women's grades. If there are 6 or more entries in a single Masters category then that grade will be awarded its own medals and podium.

Notes

All bike MUST be road legal (no brakeless fixies!) and to be eligible for the official State Championship categories, bikes must meet UCI regulations for road racing (available here).

All participants are to sign on at the Ashton Community Memorial Hall (cnr Lobethal Rd and Stony Rise Rd) before continuing on to the Start for their respective Start Time, and upon finishing either stay at the Finish to cheer on their fellow riders, or head back to the hall to await presentations and results.

It is a requirement of entry that all participants hold at least a Cycling Australia Ride membership, which can be purchased for as little as $9/month.
