Bar Wars
The JCC End of Season Bash

What on earth is Bar Wars?

Jindabyne Cycling Club, in partnership with Jindabyne Trail Stewardship, are waving goodbye to the 23/24 MTB season with another celebration of gravity cycling on the Pink Trail. Price is all inclusive -- flow racing, shuttles, BBQ and a shot at plenty of awesome prizes from Dharco, Gravity Sports and others.

Being International Star Wars Day, we couldn't help but embrace the famous film franchise for a race theme. Descending speed is one thing, but best dressed is where the real competition and prizes will be at...

Date/time Saturday, May 4th 2024 (afternoon)

Bar Wars is brought to you by Dharco, Gravity Sports, Pit Viper, Jindy Riders and Bike Betty. Sincere thanks for logistics support from Lake Crackenback/Harro's, Brooke Darlington Photography, Snowy Mountains Grammar School, Peter Baff Constructions and Snowy Monaro Regional Council.

Can my kid enter and what do they get?

Micro Groms (untimed) Mini Groms Midi Groms Maxi Groms
Male & Female Categories 5-6 years 7-8 years 9-10 years 11-12 years
Pricing $15 $22 $22 $22

Notes:

  • Inclusions - Shuttles 1pm-3.30pm in groups with volunteer guides/marshals, timed racing, BBQ snacks and lollies of course.
  • Effective ages - Ages are as at 31 December 2024.
  • Capacity limits - For various logistical reasons, we are limiting entries to 50 across the Mini Groms, Midi Groms and Maxi Groms categories.
  • Bike and ability limits - Except for Micro Groms, we can only fit 24" and larger bikes on the trailer and racers need to be reasonably confident riding an intermediate flow trail without stopping. Cruising down is fine but stopping at trail features or due to fatigue creates a hazard for everyone.
  • Special arrangements for Micro Groms - We will make some special shuttling and riding arrangements for a group of 5-6 year old Micro Groms on 20" bikes. This category will be all genders, untimed and will exit before the gully at the base of the trail. Parents or older siblings are encouraged to ride with these kiddies.

Does my kid need a race licence?

Yep, but try to score a freebie

For insurance purposes, all riders need to be current race members of AusCycling. If your child hasn't held a race licence before, we suggest taking up a free trial membership here: https://www.auscycling.org.au/membership/other/free-trial If you've used the freebie previously, other options are:

  • AusCycling Annual Race Membership - This is something to think about if your child will be doing other JCC races or other racing in the region (Thredbo, Eden, Tathra etc); or
  • AusCycling Day Licence - This is available via tickbox at entry at a cost of $44 per day (cost-price from AusCycling sorry). If you don't require a Day Licence, please avoid ticking the Day Licence option.

What's the plan for this thing?

  • Registration from 12:30pm at Echidna Place, Tyrolean Village
  • Rider briefing, meet your guides/marshals and group mates from 12:45pm
  • Shuttles begin circulating and racing commences from 1pm
  • Shuttles end and presentations from 3.30pm. The BBQ will be running from about 2pm and during presentations.

Can I drop my kids and run? No. While racers will be circuiting in marshalled groups, we'd appreciate if parents could still be around to cheer the kids on and join the BBQ. 5-6 year old Micro Groms need an older riding buddy.

Where do I park? Parking is available above RaceHQ at Echidna Place. This will be a combination of off-street and on-street parking.

Do I need to give back my kid's timing chip?

Yes! While JCC think it's a great idea to hand out our expensive timing equipment to a bunch of sugared up kiddies, if parents could please ensure timing chips are returned we'd very much appreciate that. Replacement cost for the chip is $140.

What does the racing component involve?

Sanctioning and regulations

This is an AusCycling sanctioned 'Bronze' level event that will follow the technical regulations for downhill in a very loose kid friendly way.

Course and number of runs

The course is the Pink Trail in the Tyrolean Trail Park, with shuttles up Rainbow Drive from Echidna Place. Racers will start in 30 second intervals (more where Maxi Groms follow Mini Groms or Micro Groms) with caught riders to yield to faster riders when safe to do so.

The gully and jump at the bottom of Pink Trail is either loved or feared by kiddies. The Micro Groms will leave Pink Trail before the gully and ascend Sri Chiminoy to the shuttle. The finish line for all other age groups is in the bottom of the gully, with 'pusher' volunteers to help those that don't quite make it out again.

Each racer's fastest two runs will be combined to give their finishing result. Micro Groms are untimed/participation.

Safety, safety, safety!

  • Kids must wear an Australian Standard helmet whenever they're on their bike. An open face helmet is fine, but we recommend a full-face helmet.
  • We recommend knee pads and covered elbows (ideally elbow pads).
  • Bring water and snacks in a hydration pack or bottle cage.
  • Bikes must be sized and set up appropriately. Check that your child can cover and use their brakes while still holding the handle bars.
  • Bikes must be in good working order, particularly the brakes and tyres. Disc brakes are recommended, along with knobby tyres and a Goldilocks tyre pressure.
