Women's Open Day

About

This is an event for any women, women-identifying individuals, non-binary and gender non-conforming people who are 13 years and older, interested in having a go at mountain biking either socially, racing or both. No prior experience mountain biking is required. The aim of this event is to introduce Women to mountain biking, providing them with a fun and supportive day of skills sessions, mechanic demonstrations, riding/racing tips, Q&A with club members, social ride and a BBQ.

For those without a mountain bike a limited number of hire bikes will be provided for participants to use on the day. Bikes will be provided with flat pedals suitable for use with enclosed runners/sneakers.

Auscycling membership:

All riders need a valid Auscycling membership to participate, if you do not have a membership, please visit https://auscycling.org.au/become-a-member to obtain a membership. The following are the levels of memberships accepted for this event: · Four Week Free Trial · Lifestyle – one month option available

FAQ

Who is this event for?

This event is for any women, women-identifying individuals, non-binary and gender non-conforming people who are 13 years and older that are interested in having a go at mountain biking either socially, racing or both. No mountain bike experience is required.

What type of bike do I need?

A safe and functioning flat bar mountain bike or mountain e-bike is required for this event, please ensure your brakes are working and you have air in your tyres. We will be running a bike safety check at the start of the session and will be able to assist with any minor issues identified such as tyre pressures. No road or gravel bikes with drop bars.

What if I don’t have bike?

There will be a limited number of bikes available for hire as part of this event to allow those without mountain bikes to participate. When registering for this event on Entryboss select the entry for “Session + Bike Hire” provide your height and if you require a helmet in the remarks so we can hire you the correct size bike. The bikes will be fitted with flat pedals so any enclosed runner/sneaker type footwear will be appropriate.

What do I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that you feel comfortable riding a bike in such as T-shirt, shorts, activewear, leggings and Lycra. Enclosed footwear with flat soles such as runner/sneakers or cycling specific shoes. Helmets need to have an Australian Standards sticker which can be located inside the helmet.

What skill level is required?

It is expected participants will be able to ride a bike but no specific bike skills are required, the skills sessions will be tailored to the group with a key focus on beginner riders.

What should I bring?

Please bring a safe and working mountain bike, helmet with Australian Standards sticker inside, enclosed footwear such as runners/sneakers, water bottle, and sunscreen. We also recommend sunglasses and gloves if you have them.

Do I have to attend the whole day?

If you can’t stay for the whole day that’s ok, we have arranged the schedule so you can get the most out of the skills and mechanic sessions. The BBQ and social ride are optional extras that will give you an opportunity to meet other members of the club and put those skills you just learnt into practice out on the trails.

Who can attend the BBQ and Social Ride?

The BBQ and social ride are part of the event and is automatically included in registration for participants. All GMBC members (including male) are welcome to attend the BBQ and social ride, providing participants the opportunity to meet club members. If you wish to only attend the BBQ and social ride please register for “BBQ + Social Ride Only” on Entryboss to assist with catering.

Do I need to be a Geelong Mountain Bike Club Member?

No you do not need to be a GMBC member to attend this event. You do need to have Auscycling Insurance of Lifestyle Membership as a minimum to attend. Auscycling offer a Free 4-week trial licence for anyone who has not had a membership before.
